What we keep, and why.
This policy covers this website, the newsletter, event registrations, Academy applications and donations. It is written to be read, not skimmed.

Who we are
AfricaHackon, Nairobi, Kenya, is the data controller for the personal data described here. That covers AfricaHackon, the AfricaHackon Academy, the Titans bootcamp, our events and this website. Contact us about privacy at the address at the end of this page.
What we collect
Your email address when you subscribe to the newsletter. Your name, contact details and payment reference when you donate. Your name, contact details, education and work history when you apply to the Academy or Titans, or register for an event or for membership. While you study with us: attendance, assignments, assessment and exam results, fee payments and your squad. For Titans applicants under eighteen, a parent or guardian's details and consent. Photos and video taken at our events and classes. Basic, anonymous analytics about how this website is used.
Why we collect it
To send you the newsletter you asked for. To receipt and report on donations. To assess applications, run the programmes, issue certificates and Credly badges, and track outcomes such as completion and employment, which we publish only in aggregate. To keep the community safe. We rely on your consent, on the contract you enter when you enrol, and on our legal obligations, such as keeping financial records.
Who we share it with
Service providers who process data for us: Paystack, which processes donations and tuition and holds your card or M-Pesa details; the learning platforms the Academy runs on, such as Discord and Google Classroom; Credly, for badges; the mailing-list provider; and cloud hosting. Some of these providers store data outside Kenya, and we only use providers that protect it to the standard the law requires. Employers, only when you ask us to make an introduction. Funders and scholarship sponsors receive aggregate reports, never named individuals without consent. We do not sell personal data.
How long we keep it
Newsletter data until you unsubscribe. Donation records for seven years, as required for accounts. Application and programme records for the duration of the programme plus five years for outcome tracking, then deleted or anonymised.
Your rights
Under the Kenya Data Protection Act, 2019, you can ask to see the data we hold on you, correct it, delete it, or object to how we use it. Email us and we will respond within thirty days. You can also complain to the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner.
Photos and video
We photograph and film our classes, graduations and events and may share them on this website and our social media. Tell the team on the day, or email us later, and we will leave you out or take an image down.
Children
Titans is for teenagers aged 13 to 17. We collect a Titan's data only with a parent or guardian's consent, collect only what we need to run the bootcamp and keep them safe, and never publish a Titan's photo or name without that consent.
Keeping it safe
We are a cybersecurity organisation and hold ourselves to that standard. Access to personal data is limited to the staff who need it, accounts use strong authentication, and we report any breach to the Data Protection Commissioner and to the people affected as the law requires.
Cookies and analytics
This site uses no advertising cookies. If we add analytics, it will be a privacy-respecting service that does not track you across other sites, and we will say so here.
